Dogs celebrate Children¡¯s Day in ageing Japan
°ü¸®ÀÚ 2023-11-16 ¿ÀÈÄ 12:25:40 26807

Description:

A growing number of pet owners in Japan are having their dogs and cats blessed during the traditional Shichi-Go-San coming-of-age festival for children. The ¡°seven-five-three¡± ceremony is usually for boys and girls as they reach those ages. But at the Inuneko Jinja or ¡°dog-cat shrine¡± within the Zama Shrine in Kanagawa prefecture south of the capital Tokyo, shiba inu dogs dressed in kimonos attend the ritual with their owners. The celebration, meant to reflect the deep bond between pet owners and their animals, has been gaining popularity amid Japan's falling birth rate.

November 14 is Shichi-Go-San, a traditional coming-of-age festival for Japanese children.

But the 'kids' brought to this shrine are of the 4-legged variety.

Shiba inu pets get the same traditional blessings offered to youngsters aged 7,5 and 3.

Dog owner: We celebrate Shichi-Go-San for human children in November. For me, this is my child, so I decided to come here to pray at the same time as the children's Shichi-Go-San is celebrated.

Dog owner: This dog is getting older. It`s considered an

old dog at age seven, so I came to pray that it will stay healthy for as long as possible.

Blessings for dogs and cats are increasingly common in Japan as the nation`s birth rate falls.

The nation saw a record-low number of births in 2022, the 7th consecutive year of decline

Zama Shrine priest: The number of children is decreasing each year, and as a result, more people are pouring their love into their dogs and eats. We want to offer the pet owners a place at Zama Shrine, where they can than God as their dogs and cats reach the agree of three, five and seven, and receive blessings so that they will have healthy and prosperous lives together.

The history of Zama Shrine dates back to the 6th century.

It set up a dedicated prayer site for pets and their owners in 2012.

since then, the number of pets blessed here has been rising every year.

The estimated number of pets brought to Zama Shrine for blessings in 2023 is 120.

Dog owner: There are not many shrines that welcome pets and allow them to walk inside,so I think it would be great to see more place like this.
