All thanks to the tiresome efforts of a horticulture teacher from Monoka.
Heidi Wahl has the story.
from the Halloween capital of the world to a place widely recognized as the pumpkin capital of the world.
We hold this pumpkin 35 hours to half moon Bay California.
Much to my surprise, we broke the world record.
Travis Ginger set a new record at the 50th world championship.
Pumpkin weigh off world's heaviest pumpkin weighing in at £2749.47.
More than the previous record nicknamed Michael Jordan.
This pumpkin was bound for greatness. I was shocked.
I mean, I thought it was heavy but I wasn't quite sure that it could be that heavy, but its growth was enough to convince organizers to get a larger scale for the event.
Travis,
a horticulture and landscape teacher at Anoka Technical College started growing pumpkins
three decades ago and it's a 184 day labor of love.
I start the seed April 10th.
I pollinate the pumpkin around June 5th this year and the pumpkin's about 120 days old when it's picked. Travis is no stranger to say records.
In fact, at this very same event last year, he broke the North American record.
Now, with the world record, I really feel like I lost a pumpkin this year.
That would have been much bigger than this.
One part of me wants to grow that seed and try it again for now.
He's enjoying with family, the fruits of his labor, A $30,000 check and priceless reactions.
That's why we do it to put miles on people's faces. But today I had a smile on my face.
The pumpkin will stay in half moon bay for their pumpkin festival this weekend.
Travis says it will most likely come back to Minnesota for an event the weekend before Halloween and then get carved into a jack o lantern.
And if you loved all of this, the still water harvest fest is this weekend and it includes a pumpkin way off back to you.
