Hey, kids! In today's video, we will be learning as to why trees are important.  

Are you ready? Let's begin.  

Trees give us oxygen.  

Trees are like the Earth's lungs.  

They take in the gas called carbon dioxide—the stuff we breathe out—and turn it into oxygen—the stuff we breathe in.  

Without trees, we'd have a lot less air to breathe.  

They provide shade and cool the Earth.  

Have you ever stood under a tree on a hot day?  

It feels cooler because the trees give us shade and help cool the Earth by blocking the sun's heat.   

They give homes to animals.  

Birds build nests in the branches, squirrels hide in tree holes, and insects live in the bark.  

Without trees, many animals would have no place to live.   

Trees help stop floods and erosion.  

Trees have strong roots that hold the soil together.  

This stops dirt from washing away when it rains.  

 It also helps prevent floods by soaking up rainwater like a sponge.  

They give us food and materials.  

Trees grow delicious fruits like apples, oranges, and bananas.  

We also get wood from trees to make houses, furniture, and paper.   

Now, here are fun facts about trees:   

Oldest tree 

The oldest known tree is called Methuselah, and it's about 4,800 years old.  

That means it started growing before the great pyramids were built.

The tallest tree is a coast redwood named Hyperion, standing at 380 feet tall—that's taller than the Statue of Liberty.   

Banana trees are not trees.  

Banana plants are actually the world's tallest herbs.  

They don't have the woody stems that real trees have.   

Oxygen for all 

For all, one large tree can provide a day's supply of oxygen for four people.  

So, the more trees we have, the more fresh air we get.
