A tsunami is a series of large, powerful waves caused by underwater earthquakes or tectonic shifts. When the ocean floor moves suddenly, it releases energy that creates waves traveling at high speeds. As these waves reach shallow waters near the shore, they grow taller and can cause significant destruction. 

쓰나미는 수중 지진이나 지각 변동으로 인해 발생하는 크고 강력한 파도의 연속입니다. 해저가 갑자기 움직이면 에너지를 방출하여 빠른 속도로 이동하는 파도를 일으킵니다. 이러한 파도는 해안 근처의 얕은 물에 도달하면 높이가 높아져 심각한 파괴를 일으킬 수 있습니다.​

What is a tsunami? 

“I don’t know.” 

Tsunami is a series of giant waves. 

In Japanese, tsunami means 'Harbor Wave'. 

“And in Chinese?” 

Oh, just listen. 

 

A wave is created when energy passes through water. 

Moving air or wind provides energy to water, forming regular waves. 

While on the ocean floor, when a tectonic plate suddenly slides beneath the other, the resulting earthquake releases a tremendous amount of energy. 

This energy spreads outward from the point of earthquake, triggering waves that can form tsunami. 

Initially, these waves are small in size but they travel at great speeds. 

However, when the waves approach the shore, the rising seabed obstructs the energy of waves. 

This slows down the speed of waves. 

But the energy flux must remain constant, leading to an increase in the height of waves, thus resulting in tsunami.

일본어로 쓰나미는 '항해파'를 의미합니다.

에너지가 물을 통과할 때 파동이 생성됩니다.
공기나 바람이 움직이는 것은 물에 에너지를 공급하여 규칙적인 파동을 형성합니다.
해저에서 지각판이 갑자기 다른 지각판 아래로 미끄러질 때, 그 결과 발생하는 지진은 엄청난 양의 에너지를 방출합니다.
이 에너지는 지진 발생 지점에서 바깥쪽으로 퍼져 나가며 쓰나미를 형성할 수 있는 파도를 일으킵니다.
처음에 이 파동들은 크기는 작지만 매우 빠른 속도로 이동합니다.
그러나 파도가 해안에 접근하면 상승하는 해저가 파도의 에너지를 방해합니다.
이것은 파도의 속도를 늦춥니다.

그러나 에너지 흐름은 일정하게 유지되어야 하며, 이는 파도의 높이를 증가시켜 쓰나미를 초래합니다.
