India to Become Most Populous Country

In 2022, the global population hit a major milestone when it reached 8 billion people for the first time in history. In the near future, India is expected to set its own record as it overtakes China to become the world¡¯s most populous country.

According to the latest United Nations figures, India is currently home to 1.417 billion people. This number is projected to increase to 1.66 billion by 2050.

Currently, only China, with its population of 1.426 billion, ranks higher than India. However, the Chinese fertility rate stands at 1.18 children per woman, while in India, that number rises to 2.16.

The difference in fertility rates means that China¡¯s population is expected to start declining in the near future, whereas India¡¯s population will continue to grow for sometime. Already, more babies are born in India each year than anywhere else in the world.

As India assumes the title of the world¡¯s most populous country, the impacts are likely to be felt both at home and abroad.

For starters, the South Asian nation is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Just last year, India overtook the United Kingdom as the world¡¯s fifth-largest economy, and it is set to overtake Japan as the world¡¯s third-largest economy by as early as 2028.

This is partly because of the country¡¯s large labor pool* and competitive labor costs, which make it an attractive option for multinational corporations looking to relocate their production facilities. As more money and jobs flow into India, its economic power will continue to increase.

Interestingly, even as India overtakes China, the rate of its population growth is actually slowing down. This reflects a broader global trend of women bearing fewer children as living standards rise.

In fact, experts say that although the global population is still growing, it will eventually peak at 10.4 billion in 2080 or so. After that, there is expected to be a long, slow decline.

Questions:
1. What is the current population of India, and what is the projected population by 2050?
2. How does India's fertility rate compare to China's fertility rate, and how will this affect their population growth?
3. Why is India becoming an attractive option for multinational corporations?
4. What is the global trend in fertility rates, and how is it reflected in India's population growth?
5. What do you think are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a large population? How do you think the increasing population in India could affect the country's infrastructure, such as housing, transportation, and healthcare?
