Rome Fights Over Coins in Fountain

The Trevi Fountain in Rome is one of the world¡¯s most popular tourist attractions. Recently, however, a minor controversy occurred over the iconic monument.

Built in 1762, the beautiful stone fountain is located in the center of Italy¡¯s capital city, and millions of tourists visit the site every year. When they do, most tourists throw coins into the fountain. According to legends, this act guarantees that the person would one day return to Rome.

Surprisingly, the amount of coins thrown into the 257-year-old fountain is no small change. In fact, a total of about 1.7 million U.S. dollars were scooped out of the fountain in 2016.

In recent years, the coins from the fountain were given to Caritas, a charity organization run by the Roman Catholic Church. The organization then used the funds to help the poor and homeless of Rome.

In early January, however, the city government of Rome made other plans for the fountain coins. The capital city was suffering from a range of problems ,including broken public buses and potholes in the streets. So, Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi suggested that the city use the coins to fix these various problems, and the city council agreed.

Soon after the decision became known, however, there was a huge backlash. The Catholic Church criticized the mayor, saying that the money was vital for feeding and aiding the poor. Many people went on social media, demanding that the mayor change her mind.

Days after the backlash, Mayor Raggi publicly reversed her decision. ¡°I confirm that the coins will remain available to the charitable activities of the Roman Catholic Church,¡± she said in a newspaper interview.
