Korean Motorists Resist Eco Revolution

                 Korean Motorists Resist Eco Revolution

Seven of the 10 bestselling cars in Korea from January to September were mid-sized or bigger even though wallets are shrinking. The Carnival, Grandeur, G80, K80, Palisade, Sonata and Sorento ruled the roost, and four of them are large cars.

The proportion of large cars has doubled over the last six years, threatening pledges to reduce carbon emissions and lighten snarled traffic.

That bucks the trend in advanced regions like Europe, where all of the 10 bestselling cars were subcompacts or compacts, or Japan, where nine out of the 10 were.

Surging sales of SUVs in Korea show a worrying resistance to more eco-friendly driving, energy efficiency and less congested roads. Seven out of every 10 or 69 percent of cars sold in Korea this year were SUVs, up from just 39 percent in 2015. And demand for large SUVs that take up all the road space there is like the Expedition, Palisade, Traverse and Tahoe are increasing.

Car importers are competing to bring in pickup trucks the size of a small troop transporter to feed the appetite, while the Kia Carnival minivan, which used to be mostly a commercial vehicle, has become a popular family car, rising to the No. 4 spot in domestic sales.

The main motivation is for size's sake, but there is also a growing trend to flee the cities for the great outdoors with half the family's possessions in the boot since the coronavirus pandemic.

That resistance also shows in the omnipresence of diesel delivery vehicles that clog up the roads as the use of delivery services in Korea has almost tripled over the last decade. Last year each Korean used delivery services 70.3 times, up from 25 times in 2010.

The increase in demand for delivery by commercial vehicles caused diesel fuel use to surge 31 percent over the last decade to 19.75 million tons.

Automakers are stopping production of diesel passenger cars, but diesel trucks continue to be manufactured in large numbers. But 49 percent of delivery vehicles are more than 10 years old and their average fuel efficiency stands at 4.7 km per liter. Only 172 out of 480,000 registered delivery vehicles have been changed to electric vehicles, according to the National Assembly Research Service.
